There Is No Political Prisoner Named Bradley Manning

You may be thinking of Breanna Manning, former army intelligence analyst.  She deserves to be free, she deserves a heros accolades, and she deserves to be called by her preferred name as pronoun.  We all do.

(1:13:10 PM) bradass87: i just… dont wish to be a part of it… at least not now… im not ready… i wouldn’t mind going to prison for the rest of my life, or being executed so much, if it wasn’t for the possibility of having pictures of me… plastered all over the world press… as boy…

(1:14:11 PM) bradass87: i’ve totally lost my mind… i make no sense… the CPU is not made for this motherboard…

(1:14:42 PM) bradass87: s/as boy/as a boy

(10:33:58 AM) bradass87: im already starting to give “Breanna” a digital presence… twitter, youtube accounts set up in her name

(10:35:02 AM) bradass87: domain and server set up some time this week… going to design and build an entire content management system from scratch

(10:35:43 AM) bradass87: literally going backwards four years to start over…

(10:56:28 AM) bradass87: this is such a disaster… //CRISIS//

(11:02:24 AM) bradass87: i need a lot more than a hug

(02:04:59 PM) bradass87: i punched a colleague in the face during an argument… (something I NEVER DO…!?) its whats sparked this whole saga

(02:06:24 PM) did they have it oming?

(02:06:33 PM) bradass87: yes

(02:06:44 PM) bradass87: as a result, i was referred (forced) to behavioral health… to evaluate me… as a result, my commander had access to all of my mental health files… ergo how they found out about my cross-dressing history, discomfort with my role in society, and the environment i’ve placed myself in

(1:43:59 PM) bradass87: im self medicating like crazy when im not toiling in the supply office (my new location, since im being discharged, im not offically intel anymore)

It’s crazy the way in which all the protests and solidarity stuff totally ignored this.

things about this really stick out:

  1.  It explains why she would reach out and spill her highly illegal risky activity to Adrian Lamo. He was exploiting her by talking to her about her gender identity and trouble related to it.
  2. It makes the disturbing revelations about her prison conditions even more disturbing. When they stripped her naked and left her in a cell for days, it seems that this has even deeper psychological issues at play. I have little doubt that her interrogators know about her gender identity and are using it as a form of torment.
  3. Wired is incredibly cis-sexist in not publishing this information. Fuck them.

I want to believe you, but I’m going to have to see some citation here.

Okay, :-)

Wired Chat logs:

Note the “CPU isn’t made for the motherboard” and the creating a online presence for Breanna Manning (!/bmanningfm) <-looks like her

Dan Savage defends against being called a transphobe

Now, I have listened to Dan Savage for several years now (that makes me feel old) and never felt he was being transphobic. Then BAM Dan Savage is a transphobe is suddenly common knowledge among all my friends! How could this be? had my cis-privilege helped me over look all of his glaring faults?

Reading his response pretty much convinced me that my initial impression was right and that Dan Savage is decisively not a transphobe.

Go glitter bomb Lierre Keith or some actual transphobes, I am sure you can find lots of targets.

Please tell me that you are not serious.

Bolding mine.

But Dan Savage responds to claims by saying “No I’m not!”? OBVIOUSLY HE’S NOT A CIS PRIVILEGED ASSHOLE.

Dan Savage may have said some problematic things but that doesn’t make him a transphobe. Do you know why not? Because he responds to the criticism and stops it.

Furthermore, Dan Savage said a whole lot more in this article than “IM NOT A TRANSPHOBE”. Let me point out several pieces of supporting evidence he gives which I find quite convincing:

  1. He actively tries to not use transphobic language and make some attempt to call folks who do out
  2. He actively supports transfolk by regularly including them and  giving them space on his show to articulate their experiences
  3. He addresses trans issues in a sympathetic way, since 1999, far before a vast part of the LGBT community had really thought about what that T meant.
  4. He raises money for trans victims of hate crimes and discrimination, going out of his way to leverage his popularity (that probably exists to some extent due to his white, male, cis privilege) to address trans issues.

To me, Dan Savage is not an enemy of transfolks and nothing I have heard from folks has actually convinced me in the slightest that Dan Savage is. Even
Dan Savage is not a good enemy for transfolk because he does honestly seem to be trying his best to be an ally. Any examples pointed to to show he is a transphobe need show that he is being transphobic and it is not just a well meaning ally saying something that can be (or very occasionally) be construed as denying the lived experience of transfolk.

There are lots of real enemies who really need to get glitterbombed. These people don’t spend their time trying to be allies and actively go around spewing vitriolic hatred (hence my comment about Lierre Kieth). If people need glitter bomb targets, don’t target allies. That is not how people learn.

GAH… this is pissing me off so much.
